It sounds as though you are talking about building a projecting
zoetrope (drawing a sequence of pictures, placing them in a prepared
cylinder with slots, rotating it, and viewing the pictures through the
slots).
A presume a slide projector does not accomplish your goals because it
doesn't create a moving image.
How about making a movie or a videotape? You could then use a video or
movie projector to get the images to the wall/ceiling.
You might want to investigate the laser projector. You are looking for
something simple, and it might well be priced at less thatn $1000 AND
be reusable.

We wish to construct a light show and project it on to a high ceiling and high
side walls in the main lobby of a museum. The graphics will be silhouettes of
Chinese characters and dragons. We wish these to "dance" over the heads of
viewers.
I know that there are expensive ways to do this with computers, etc..
But does anybody know of a simpler manner that would consist of a stencil cut
out revolving around a light source?
