Actually in my experience, a resume is a 1-2 page summary listing of
education and work experience and is the standard application for most
jobs. A C.V. ranges from 2-10 pages and includes such things as
teaching experience, publications (incl. articles, book reviews, abstracts,
etc.), collaborations and students supervised, graduate and post
graduate advisors and advisees, memberships, presentations, and
personal items such as birth date, military service, professional service,
hobbies, etc. A C.V. is mostly used for academic or research positions.

A "Curriculum Vitae" or "C.V." and a "Resume" are exactly the same! The
first is Latin (and can be freely translated as "story of life") and is
the usual term in all English speaking countries outside N. America (and
in some US academic institutions); the second was originally French,
(though it seems to have very effectively colonised the USA nowadays).

The University of Wolverhampton (UK) has a very useful guide to C.V.
Writing which includes two down-loadable examples, plus some "donts",
