Good on yer, Maria Berry, for the info on Ned Kelly the notorious bushranger.
Not only does the Old Melbourne Gaol have Ned's desk mask, but also those of a
number of other of men and women hung in the Gaol. Most of the cells on the
lowest tier (what remains of the Gaol is one wing of a typical Pentonville
pattern prison) are actually mini exhibitions, each cell dedicated to a
different miscreant. Each cell contains the death mask, photos and any
associated artifacts. The one to which most visitors are attracted is that of
old Ned of course, as one of his suits of homemade armour is also displayed. I
believe there are 4 such suits extant. You can also see the gallows at the end
of the tier.
Di Gardiner, their VERY innovative and bright program director, established a
wonderful live theatrical production which takes place two or three times a
week after dark. It is a one-man tour de force, using a single professional
actor who plays the part of a turn of the century warder and lasts a couple of
hours, though it is so exceedingly well done, it seems only a fraction of that
time.
It's not one of Melbourne's most spectacular tourist attractions, but it should
not be missed. And - hey, haven't you always wanted a Ned Kelly refrigerator
magnet? They sell 'em!
and, after visiting Melbourne, it's a short drive up to Sovereign Hill at
Ballarat, to see one of the world's best sound and light shows - among MANY
other interesting things. Like the Old Melbourne Gaol, Sovereign Hill is one of
Victoria's lesser known treasures.
