You got very good advice about using a wood toothpick to dislodge the
wax, followed by mild hydrocarbon solvent to remove the reside (except
on wood). I would avoid the use of either heat or cold. Heat causes
expansion and cold cause shrinkage. Neither is advisable for historic
materials. Oh, you can get away with it, for 3 out of 4 projects, but
on the forth you'll be very sorry.
