As the former executive director of the Museum Trustee Association in
Washington, DC, let me tell you about another option.
In addition to planned giving programs, have you looked into a process called
"art succession planning," originated by a firm call CM Briddge, Ltd. in NY?
The partners, both avid art collectors themselves, designed the program. The
MTA has collaborated with them on several fronts.
In a meeting set up by the museum's director, they meet with the trustees and
(quite often) their personal financial planners. The museum's planned giving
official is also present. CM Briddge guides private collectors in the
management and dispositon of their art assets. The firm provides a unique
bridge between collectors and museums and advises art institutions on creating
acquisition and curatorial funding for important collections.
CM Briddge works closely with collectors to ensure both financial and
emotional objectives are met in an inheritance plan -- "art succession
planning." The plan preserves and perpetuates a collection with benefits to
the collector, the collector's family and heirs, and the museum that will
become responsible for collection. They are able to match collections with
museums that are seeking certain works.
