     Ross:

We try to post our job openings widely, and to allow
2-3 weeks for applicants to respond. We don't allow a
longer time because the whole process is so time
consuming. If I want to post a job in AVISO, NEWSGRAM,
the AASLH newsletter, etc., I have to have the ad to
them by the first of the month BEFORE it gets
published, so I've already lost up to 30 days of
waiting. Allowing another 30 for response puts me 60
days out. Then add in time to review applications to
see who's really qualified (24 out of 39 on the last
one we did), and even more time to review the
applications (24 the last time), select the "top"
candidates to interview, set up interviews, conduct
     them, etc.

When one of our curators resigned, she told me in late
May so I could submit the add by June 1 - she left at
the end of June, and it was December 15 before we
actually had another person on staff. It's frustrating
from this end, too. We did not have any candidates
"pre-selected," and do actually solicit applications
because we want to find the best person for the
position. It works well for us (IMHO), but it is a
     slow process.
