MUSEUMS AND TECHNOLOGY: 3 Workshops Focusing on the Expanding Role of New
Technology in the Museum Environment

The Museum Association of New York, with support from the New York State
Council on the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts, is pleased to
offer this series of informal, conversational workshops focusing on the
expanding role of new technologies in the museum environment. These
workshops are presented in conjunction with circuits@NYS: The Governor's
Conference on Arts and Technology, which will be held March 27-29 at the
Palisades Conference Center, Palisades, NY. For information about the
circuits@NYS conference, call
212-366-6900 x342

The MUSEUMS AND TECHNOLOGY workshops address the major themes of
strengthening access to technology resources, technology and museum
practice and building skills and knowledge about technology among museums
and museum staff.

There is no registration fee for these workshops; a box lunch will be
provided at a cost of $5. We do ask you to register, however, by calling
the MANY office at 518-273-3400 or by faxing your intention to attend to
518-273-3416.

Workshop Descriptions:

Workshop I

Topic: Strategic Technology Planning for Museums
Session Leader: Robert Anderson, Anderson Technologies, New York
City
Location: Heckscher Museum, 2 Prime Avenue, Huntington, Long
Island
Date: Monday, March 9, 1998, 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

This workshop will give participants a chance to examine and plan for the
broad impact new technologies will have on museums. It will give
participants a chance to: 1) gain a basic understanding of the strategic
technology planning process; 2) assess technological change happening in
the rest of the world; 3) discuss its impact on museums in general and
their museum in particular; and 4) begin to develop mission-centered plans
to address the challenges and opportunities brought to the fore by these
changes. No technical experience is necessary.

Workshop II

Topic: Using the World Wide Web as an Educational Tool
Session Leader: Marty Kreipe de Montano, Director, Resource Center,
National Museum of the American Indian
Location: National Museum of the American Indian, One Bowling
                                Green, Manhattan
Date: Tuesday, March 10, 1998, 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

This workshop will highlight the recent work at the National Museum of the
American Indian to share its resources via the World Wide Web in an
innovative outreach project called Conexus (connects us). Many of the
museum's events are captured live and are accessible to Web browsers within
seconds of when they occur. To date, the site includes a virtual tour of
exhibitions, demonstrations by Navajo weavers, a Navajo storyteller, a play
based on an Indian perspective of Thanksgiving, and sound files for music.

Workshop III

Topic: Utilizing New Technologies for Collection
Management
Session Leaders: Roger Bruce, Director of Education, George Eastman
House and
Andrew Eskind, Manager of Information Systems,
George Eastman House
Location: George Eastman House/International Museum of
Photography and Film, 900 East Avenue, Rochester
Date: Friday, March 20, 1998, 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The collection management technologies of George Eastman
House/International Museum of Photography and Film have been evolving at
this institution for some time, making it a unique host site for this
workshop. The museum deals not just with photography and film, but also
with a decorative and fine arts collection, as well as a history collection
and library/archival materials. Discussions and demonstrations will give
participants an overview of the extent of collection management
technologies that are available and how they can be used/adapted for
museums of varying sizes, budgets and technological expertise.
