CALL FOR PAPERS

EXPANDING THE
VISUAL FIELD:
COLLECTING AND DISPLAY

A graduate student symposium

The Department of Art History at USC is pleased to announce a one-day
symposium on the collecting and the display of objects: How do strategies
of display affect the ascription of meaning to objects of art, mass
culture, and/or technology? How do conventions of and attitudes toward
collecting and display influence value? Expanding the Visual Field:
Collecting and Display will pursue these questions through a series of
scholarly papers. The conference will provide a forum for graduate
students in disparate fields (art history, museum studies, history,
cultural studies, comparative literature, architecture, anthropology, etc.)
to present research and engage in dialogue with colleagues from other
institutions. We encourage submissions which take an interdisciplinary
approach to visual culture.

Expanding the Visual Field: Collecting and Display will be held at the
University of Southern California on Saturday, April 4, 1998, from 10am to
5pm. There will be a respondent for each paper and a panel discussion
following the presentations. Abstracts will be printed and available at
the symposium.

To apply, please submit a 500-word abstract with a CV or brief professional
bio to:
