There are many fine museums on university campuses that serve academic
interests and yet rarely have visitors. Historically, from that "first
day" a museum was born, I believe it existed to maintain & study a
collection, e.g., the Ashmolean at Oxford University. In this day and age,
the Ashmolean has numerous visitors...but hasn't really changed its
original purpose, so far as I know.
