Melissa,

First of all, let me state that I make no claims about the archival
quality or conservation potential of this suggestion. That said....
Not too many months ago, while watching a home improvement show on
the Discovery channel they discussed at great length the use of cloth
as wallpaper. It seems that in order to hang it all you need is
liquid starch (of the sort you by at the grocery store). Simply wet
the cloth throughly in the starch, remove the excess and place the
cloth on the wall. According to the show, it will not peel off due
to moisture and when you do need to remove it simply peel it off
without harm to the wall surface. It was touted as the perfect thing
for apartment dwellers.
Before using this suggestion, however, I would want some imput from
the conservators on the list about any problems the starch would
cause the wall or any possible off-gassing.
        Hope this helps.
