THUNDERBIRD, WHALE, LIGHTNING SNAKE EXHIBIT

The Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) in Canada is planning a show
which will contain artifacts, art and ethnography from the Nuu-chah-nulth
First Nations (formerly known as "Nootka") from the west coast of Vancouver
Island. The material for the show comes from the RBCM's collection of 1900
Nuu-chah-nulth artifacts and from other collections. This will be the first
major Nuu-chah-nulth show. We expect the exhibit to encompass
approximately 5000 square feet and include an estimated 150 artifacts and
artworks. It will open in Victoria, British Columbia in July 1999 and will
thereafter go on the road in 2000. It may potentially go to 10 venues over
a period of 4 years. Rental bookings will be in blocks of 12 - 16 weeks.

Plans for the show include audio guides featuring Nuu-cha-nulth voices;
singers, dancers. Members of distinguished chiefly families are involved
with the exhibit planning. There will also be artist demonstrations, and a
World Wide Web site for the show. A resource and marketing concepts
package will assist local program development and promotion. A full-colour
catalogue will describe artifacts, and include articles on Nuu-cha-nulth
history and art by artists and scholars. Museum-quality products will be
designed and produced for sale. The show will be travelling in North
America with the possibility of also travelling to venues in Europe and/or
Asia, Australia.

In preparation for this travelling exhibit, the RBCM is doing some
developmental work. We are interested in receiving the following:

1. Expressions of interest from museums or galleries that might be
interested in hosting this exhibit.
2. Information about other major First Nations or ethnographic exhibits
which may be travelling between the years 2000 and 2004. (exhibits of
comparable size or subject matter).
3. Information about other major First Nations or ethnographic exhibits
which are travelling currently, or have travelled since 1993. (exhibits of
comparable size or subject matter).

PLEASE RESPOND OFF-LIST concerning the above to [log in to unmask]
