Dear Nature Writing Colleague:
Call For Nature Essays
The John Burroughs Association bestows an award for an outstanding
natural history essay each year. This award is given in recognition of John
Burroughs' great contribution to American literature, the Nature Essay. He
has written over 400 essays which comprise his complete work of 23 volumes.
You are invited to submit natural history essays that have been published
within the past year in periodicals such as magazines, newspapers or
newsletters (published books are excluded).
The award, made by a panel of judges, is based upon natural history,
content, and literary value. Previous winners include Gerrat Vermeig, "The
Touch of a Shell" (Discover, 1996, and also published in his Privileged
hands), Gary Noel Ross, "Butterfly Wrangling in Louisiana" (Natural
History, 1995), John Danils, "Toward Wild Heartlands" (Audubon Magazine,
1994), and John Mitchell, "Time and the River" (Sanctuary, 1993).
The award is announced in February of the succeeding year and bestowed
at the prestigious annual literary award lunch at the American Museum of
Natural History in April. The essay will be published in the WakeRobin,
newsletter of the Association, and on-line at the John Burroughs website.
To enter, submit the form at the bottom of this page and a copy of the
original essay to the John Burroughs Association Essay Selection Committee,
American Museum of Natural History, 15 West 77th Street, New York, NY 10024
