Dear Paleontological Colleague:
Each year the Paleontological Society calls for nominations for the Harrell
L. Strimple Award (see attached description). The Strimple Award is an
important means of acknowledging the extraordinary contributions to
paleontology made by many dedicated citizens who do not make their living
full-time from working in the discipline. The award consists of a plaque
presented at the annual business meeting and awards luncheon of the
Paleontological Society, which is held in conjunction with the Geological
Society of America meetings each fall.
As Chair of the Strimple Award Committee I would be delighted to receive
any nominations that you might have for the Strimple Award. The details of
what is required for a nomination are outlined on the attached sheet.
I would also be very grateful if you could pass on this notice to any other
paleontological societies that you might be aware of.
Thank you for your help in identifying further deserving recipients of the
Strimple Award.
Sincerely,
Peter R. Crane

THE HARRELL L. STRIMPLE AWARD
FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN PALEONTOLOGY
BY AMATEURS
Each year the Paleontological Society calls for nominations for its
Strimple Award to recognize outstanding achievement in paleontology by
amateurs. For the purposes of the award, an amateur is someone who does
not make her or his living full-time from paleontology.
The award may be given for a record of outstanding research and
publication, the making of outstanding collections, the safeguarding of
unique paleontological resources through varied public service approaches,
teaching activities that focus on paleontology, collaborative efforts with
others working in paleontology, and similar accomplishments.
Anyone, including other amateurs, may make a nomination. Nominators do not
have to be members of the Paleontolgical Society.
The nomination should include: 1) the full name, address and phone number
(e-mail too if they have it); 2) a certification by the nominator of the
amateur status of the nominee; 3) a brief description of the nominee's
achievements in paleontology not to exceed three pages; 4) any number of
supporting letters and other documentation, which will be bound and
presented to the awardee.
These should be sent by March 1, 1998, to the Chair of the Strimple Award
Committee, Peter R. Crane, The Field Museum, Roosevelt Road at Lake Shore
Drive, Chicago IL 60605-2496. Fax 312-360-9858, e-mail
