I think most artists consider a museum show to be a milestone in their
career and are more than willing to exhibit without direct compensation.  I
have had artists who do installation art ask for a fee to come and
install/fabricate their work on site, but the great majority have not asked
for this.

I've done major shows with major artists like James Rosenquist, Robert
Morris, Judy Pfaff, and next year Sol LeWitt, some of whom spent as much as
three weeks here installing their shows.  All were paid 100% of their
expenses but none were paid, nor asked for, a fee.

We have no policy, I evaluate each situation case by case.  But, funding
being what it is, there's not a lot in the budget for paying artists to
exhibit.
