Our museum operations are part of the State Historical
Society, a state agency. Our policy is that all
communications produced on agency equipment are agency
property, including electronic media. Much as we would
not expect an employee (including me) to write a letter
to his/her mom on state agency stationery, and using
state agency postage, we expect that employees will not
write E-mails to mom, either.
This is not closely monitored, but we don't perceive
there is any particular problem with staff abusing the
electronics. If one were perceived, monitoring or
restrictions might be warranted.
By the way, my mom doesn't have E-mail.
