The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria (on
southern Vancouver Island) is offering a six day immersion course on
planning strategies for museum and heritage professionals. We are pleased to
be working with Gail Lord, President of LORD Cultural Resources, on this
intensive course. If you are interested in participating on either a credit or
non-credit basis, please let us know as quickly as possible as a few seats remain
available, and the advance readings and preparatory assignment are now being
distributed.

PLANNING IN CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
DATE: October 20-25, 1997

Effective planning establishes a foundation on which cultural
organizations can grow, change, adapt and prosper in an
uncertain world. This intensive course looks at the role and
benefits of planned approaches to development and management,
and develops your ability to select and apply appropriate strategies
to meet your institutional needs. You will examine the range of
planning activities which are crucial to museums, historic sites,
galleries and other cultural institutions, including:
- strategic planning
- financial planning
- facilities planning
- planning for staff and resource allocation
- marketing planning
- program planning
The critical role of community values and organizational mission in the
planning process are stressed throughout the course. Note: this course features
a preparatory assignment involving a SWOT analysis and environmental scan
of your organization.

Instructor: Gail Lord is president of Lord Cultural Management, and has
extensive international experience in planning for museums and other
cultural organizations. She is co-author of 'The Manual of Museum
Management' (1997) and 'The Manual of Museum Planning' (1991).

Fee: $589 (Canadian Funds)

Transportation: Victoria is easily accessible by air or by ferry from either
Vancouver or Seattle.

Accommodation: Program Staff can recommend inexpensive B&B
accommodation, or you can stay on campus @ $75 (CDN) per night.
