PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH PARTICIPATION PROGRAM

Project # STL 98-02

U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, ST. LOUIS DISTRICT:
MILITARY OBJECTS INVENTORY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT

Pending funding, three postgraduate internships will be awarded by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District for participation in
military objects inventory and conservation projects for the Baltimore
District's Pentagon Renovation Project. Interns will participate in the
inventorying and evaluating of military objects that are housed in the
Pentagon. Two incumbents will participate under supervision in the
Pentagon and will be stationed in the National Capitol region. Data
gathered from this inventory will be entered into computerized
databases. Report writing is also required.

This project will provide interns with a broad application of museum
methods in the federal setting. They will be interacting with DoD
curators, museum and materials specialists, conservators, and private
contractors. This project will provide numerous possibilities for research
concerning federal legislation and military objects curation, conservation
issues, and the effort and preparation required to prepare, inventory,
evaluate, pack, transport, store, and reinstall military objects in a
renovated building.

Applicants should have a bachelor's or master's degree (preferred) in
objects conservation, museum studies, or anthropology with an
emphasis in objects conservation or collections management. Extensive
experience working with museum collections and archival materials is
required. Experience in conservation assessment, exhibit preparation,
packing, and transport is preferred. Word processing and database
management skills associated with museum collections are requisite, as
are good writing and verbal communication skills. Candidates may be
required to lift and manipulate heavy (up to 50 pounds) objects and
containers.

The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens and permanent resident
aliens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, national origin, or
status as a Vietnam Era veteran or disabled veteran. Participants will be
selected based on academic records, recommendations, and
compatibility of background and experience with project requirements.

This postgraduate Research Participation Program is administered by Oak
Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Two participants will
be mentored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center of
Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections
(MCX-CMAC), but will be located in the Washington, D.C., area.

Appointments are full time, for a one-year period, renewable for up to
two additional years upon recommendation of the St. Louis District and
dependent upon funding. Annual stipends will start $26,000 for a
bachelor's degree recipient and are subject to negotiations. Federal
taxes will not be withheld from the stipend and will be the responsibility
of the appointee. Participants must show proof of health and medical
insurance (either through a private plan or by purchase from the plan
available through ORISE).

An application, current vitae, three references, and samples of writing
should be sent to Dr. Michael Trimble, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St.
Louis District, ATTN:CEMVS-PD-C, 1222 Spruce St., St. Louis, MO
63103-2833.
