NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

Public Affairs Specialist

The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks an energetic and
experienced public affairs specialist to conceptualize and implement
media relations activities for the Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Directorate.  The candidate should have a bachelor's degree in one of
the mathematical or physical sciences such as chemistry or physics.
Candidates should also have demonstrated skill in communicating, both
orally and in writing, about the mathematical and physical sciences to
diverse audiences.

The successful applicant will develop and implement print and
electronic communications plans; initiate, develop, and disseminate a
range of non-technical and specialized materials to regional, national
and international media; place media materials and interviews with NSF
officials with appropriate media outlets; arrange press conferences,
media briefings and other public information activities; and, work
closely with public information officials in colleges, universities
and other research-oriented institutions to expand news coverage and
understanding of NSF-supported projects and programs.

Required qualifications include at least three years of
experience working with print and electronic media, preferably in a
major market, and demonstrated skill in developing written material
dealing specifically within math and physical sciences.  An advanced
degree in communications or a related field is preferred.  Candidates
should also display an understanding of how research and educational
programs fit into the larger context, including NSF mission and how
they are impacted by outside groups such as Congress, scientific
organizations and the scientific community.

NSF is recruiting for this critical position from colleges,
universities, other eligible institutions, and state and local
governments under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA).  The
individual selected for the 1-2 year assignment will remain an employee
of his or her institution.  Reimbursement of salary and other related
costs are negotiated between NSF and the individual's institution.
