Dear Mary,
I would suggest the following check-ups:
1) What kind of weevils is involved? Are the only looking dangerous or are they?
It is important to know the life circle of these bugs.
2) How could they invade the show cases? What do you call standard exhibition
cases? If they would use clean air-tight show cases, they could minimize the
danger in the future. I suppose that air-tight showcases are produced in the US.
3) Normally, if you find pests here and there, they are mostly everywhere.
4) How often the cases were controlled by the museum personnel that they
overlooked a hornet nest?
5) What was the reason for the weavils to choose the showcase with metal in it?
Are the metal objects standing on felt or wooden shelves?
6) The museum staff should get in contact quickly with (different) professional
pest controllers. It is not a shame to ask them. They should not try to start a
war against these weevils by themselves.
Best regards
