Elizabeth,
Are you refering to ambient sound systems, public
address/announcement systems, or exhibit audio such as
digital repeaters, tape loop playback machines and the like.
There are also varying means of presenting the sound such as
speakers, telephone handsets and other hand-held speakers
and speakers which hang from the ceiling and are equipped
with parabolic domes which project the sound into a certain
floor space to eliminate overlap into other exhibit areas.
Or are you interested in things like...
How many decibels should a speaker output be? To deal with
ambient sound in a gallery which varies with the amount and
enthusiam of the people present, there are amplifier systems
which sample ambient noise and adjust speaker output
accordingly.
I would be interested in participating on a dialog on this
topic myself, so any museum-l'ers who would like to relate
their experiences, please "sound off."
