Dear List:
Recently, our museum was offered the following piece:
20"X16" framed illuminated MSS, glazed front & back, revealing two
sheets of words & music from a Gregorian Chant on vellum. It appears
to be from The Gloria of the Mass. According to a chart of notations
found in a reference manual, the musical notes seem to date to 15th or
16th century. It looks very like a page from the Salisbury Missal,
Paris, 1555 owned by the Met.
A letter from a previous owner states that it was purchased in Paris
in 1939 when France was on the verge of war & to raise funds, sold
centuries old MSS from the archives of the Paris Museum.
We do not have an expert in this discipline & wonder if anyone knows
of a source (preferably in the Western U.S.) who can evaluate and/or
appraise such a work.
Any help would be appreciated.
