A new museum is being built with two ISTEA grants: Wolf Creek Museum and
Indian Village, on Int. 77 in Bland County, Va. The archeological Wolf
Creek site was covered forever when a river was re-routed over it to build
I-77. Nearby, a replication of the ca. 1215 AD site, for living history,
was built entirely with ISTEA funds, and has been open now for 16 months,
year-round. Because it snags so many curiosity-seekers from the
Interstate, it is wildly successful and its director boasts of having
surplus cash because of high visitation, even after paying its interpretive
staff and all the bills. It is owned by the Bland County Historical
Society, which funded a summer dig at another Native American site in the
county out of 1996-97 excess income.

Now, a second grant will create an information center/first phase museum
that ultimately will be expanded. Write Rt. 1, Box 1530, Bastian, Va.
24314 attn. George Schaeffer; or call (540) 688-3438.
