They don't call it "salvage archaeology" for nothing...  This is the
situation often faced in cultural resource management - something
unexpected is found and, for whatever reason, only a very limited
timeframe is available to do something about it.  If you've got good
people, good equipment and luck, you can get good results - and if it's
going to be torn up for construction, "some is better than none".

If it turns out to be truly significant, maybe they can get an extension
of time?  I would hope this is not just some publicity gimmick - I have
no idea who this "Time Team", why the site waited for 20+ years and now
only has 3 days for investigation or how they got the resources/clout to
broadcast over a major holiday weekend.  It'll be interesting to see
what/how they do.  I'll tune in to their web site and follow what's
going on.
It's so hard to make archaeology popular without seeming to encourage
people to go out, for fun, and dig everything up, willynilly, for
themselves.  It will be interesting to see how these people handle that.
