We don't normally decline a loan if it was made short notice; I know that
that Smithsonian has a policy of being notified six months in advance
regarding a loan request.

We normally do not charge for our labor in packing, but when we are
charged, we generally tend to remember who the lender is, so that when
they come calling on us, we repay the favor. This will include crate
refurbishing (or building a new crate for the item), packing materials,
and our time doing it. Normally, we send the receipt for the packing
materials and crate to the borrower, and we charge a nominal fee for the
packing ($45 or $50), which is the going rate for fine art packers. If
we do not have the time for this, we will find a fine art packer &
shipper to work with us, and send the receipt to the lender. It's pretty
much on a case by case basis.

We do not charge an administrative loan fee; we would like to avoid that.
Again, if a lender charges us, we will remember them and avoid them if
possible. Or, if they come calling, we'll repay the favor. Good luck
with your policy review.
