Description

1. General

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is currently recruiting for  the
post of Public Programs Officer. This position will be a  half- time
contract for a year beginning Sept.1, 1997-Sept.1, 1998. The incumbent
reports directly to the Associate Director and has overall responsibility
for the creation, coordination, delivery and evaluation of the public
program for the museum. The successful candidate will be a self-initiating
individual capable of working and communicating effectively with diverse
groups of people and following critical program timelines.

2.  Typical Duties

a. Participates in museum program planning
b. Participates in social/cultural/community and environmental planning
c. Ensures development , implementation and evaluation of the core adult
programs including:
      i) Thursday evening series
     ii) Jon Whyte Literacy series
    iii) Remembrance of Things Past series
    iv) Summer Speaker series
     v) Artist/writer- in- residence program
    vi) exhibition and event-based programs
d. Ensures development and implementation of special thematic community
programs and events e.g. Sidewalk Art; Summer Artwalk; Museum sleepovers.
e. Provides support to Elderhostel program and to Heritage School Program
f. Develops departmental budget and manages all program income
g.  Recruits all program speakers/presenters, hosts/moderates/chairs their
sessions and coordinates all arrangements: travel, accommodation and
honorariums and technical set up.
h. Secure support/sponsorship for program development through fundraising,
project proposals and grants.
i. Coordinates all scheduling/booking arrangements
j. Assists in the development and distribution of program publicity and
promotion and writes articles on programs for the Cairn
k. Recruits, trains and coordinates community volunteers


Minimum Required Qualifications

1.   Skills. Abilities and Knowledge

a. General background in museum work.
b. General knowledge of museum practices and principles.
c. Good knowledge of the Banff /Bow Valley community.
d. Well developed communication skills, sufficient to make large group
presentations and articulate concepts and ideas clearly and succinctly.
e. Well developed inter-personal skills sufficient to manage a diverse
range of relationships and roles with individuals and groups.
f. General understanding of financial reporting and budgeting processes.
g. Practical computer skills sufficient to prepare reports and evaluations.
h. Good organizational skills and creativity
i. Ability to locate resources, prepare and submit effective and successful
applications to meet program resource objectives.
j. Ability to manage ambiguity and work under pressure.


2.   Education, Training and Experience

a. Undergraduate degree from recognized educational institution, preferably
majoring in education or museum-related discipline.
b. Minimum of three years experience in public programming in a museum or
in the community.
c. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
