Dear Regine,
I missed your question, (problems with receiving mail) and so don't
know exactly what you were asking re barcoding in museums.
The Australian National Maritime Museum has been using barcodes to
help manage object movement and location control since c 1987. Please
e-mail me at the address below if you would like more detailed
information about our experiences of barcode use.
For information, we use a combination of old fashioned collection
management tools (ie labels, (with the barcodes attached to them); and
numbers applied to the object in the usual fashion) and new
technology. We are able to print our own barcodes and so now have
flexibility with our numbering system. We have found barcoding very
successful. The portable barcode reader allows us to update records
instantly in situ; the records are accurate.
Kind regards
Sally Fletcher
