It would be a great help to us if you could please pass this around your

The following positions are open at the National Museum of the American
Indian.  The first position is a two year appointment in Bronx, NY, but the
opportunity will eventually be  become a  permanent position at a new
Cultural Resources Center being built in the Washington, DC area.

The other two positionis will support activities in a networked
environment  at our beautiful exhibit museum in Manhattan.

Please note:  The evaluation of applications depend a great deal on the

DUTIES: The incumbent serves as the principal resource for the
day-to-day technology functions and activities at the National Museum of
the American Indian's (NMAI) Research Branch offices; procures,
operates, maintains and services voice communications systems, local
area network (LAN) data communications services; procures, operates,
maintains and services digital imaging systems and devices; procures,
operates, maintains and services external communications equipment and
services providers and provides liaison with any common carriers or
non-SI owned communications services; determines the nature and
extent of training programs, documents the automation systems
hardware and software configuration and trains users as required;
installs and trouble-shoots the office's IBM-compatible personal computer
and MacIntosh based computer systems; develops and maintains various
microcomputer applications in support of NMAI; responds to software and
hardware problems by testing, diagnosing and adjusting necessary
components; performs routine system back-up and software upgrading
for NMAI staff computers; develops recovery routines, online backup and
recovery procedures not otherwise specified by the NMAI Technology
Coordinator; and performs other duties as assigned.

Selective Factors:   (Applicants must meet all of these mandatory
requirements in order to be considered qualified to compete for a
position.)
1.      Ability to successfully install a wide variety of hardware and
software applications (i.e. MacIntosh, MS Windows 3.1,  MS Windows
95, MS Windows NT or NT Workstation).
2.      Skill in operating and maintaining MacIntosh and IBM-compatible
microcomputers.
3.      Knowledge of the capabilities of networked workstations and
database servers running on Novell or Windows   network servers.


Quality Ranking Factors:  (These factors are not mandatory to be
considered for a position, but will be used to determine who are the
highest qualified candidates among those who meet the selective
factors.)
1.      Skill in installing, administering or troubleshooting a Novell 4.1
network or Windows NT Server.
2.      Knowledge of techniques used to avoid terminal deadlock
situations and to install, tune, modify and benchmark
        performance of hardware and software applications.
3.      Knowledge of creating World Wide Web interfaces to internal
databases.

DUTIES: The incumbent is responsible for programming, installation of
software and hardware and data system maintenance tasks using an
established Local Area Network and commercial software for database
support.  The incumbent is responsible for the performance of routine
programming tasks using established personal computer software and
for the analysis and maintenance of computer systems.  Other duties
include monitoring the operation of a variety of database activities and
responding to malfunctions by troubleshooting the systems and initiating
corrective action; designing modifications to the software or hardware,
including installing testing and debugging them; serves as a back-up to
the LAN administrator, providing data security program and data disaster
recovery program support; installs and troubleshoots the offices'
PC-based and MacIntosh-based public programs computer systems;
develops and maintains various microcomputer database and interactive
applications in support of NMAI; coordination of installation and
maintenance of exhibit-related computer systems; and performs other
duties as assigned.

1.      Knowledge of database programming languages.

DUTIES: The incumbent monitors the operation of the local area network
(LAN), including all its components and ancillary elements and responds
to malfunctions by troubleshooting the system; diagnoses these failures
to identify the source of problems among equipment, systems and
applications and initiates corrective action; studies the system to identify
the possibility of similar breakdowns elsewhere within the LAN and if
potential problems are found, considers courses of action; procures,
operates, maintains and services voice communications systems at the
George Gustav Heye Center (GGHC) facility and all LAN data
communications services; designs modifications to the LAN based on
specifications provided; installs, tests and debugs them and documents
changes to the system; procures, operates, maintains and services
external telecommunications equipment and service providers; determines
how the telephone system should be organized, identifies specific
features to be used and programs necessary changes; develops
hardware and software requirements for upgrades; procures
appropriate telephone hardware and software; codes, tests, debugs and
documents the telephone system applications using vendor-provided
software packages; develops effective test and call accounting record
data; analyzes effects of modification on telephone system users, taking
other system elements into consideration; and performs other duties as
assigned.


1.      Knowledge of the capabilities of high performance work stations.
2.      Skill in avoiding terminal deadlock situations and to install, tune,
modify and benchmark performance of LAN         systems.
3.      Knowledge of the current state of LAN technology and distributed
processing techniques.
