CHICAGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY

POSITION AVAILABLE

POSITION TITLE:                 COORDINATOR, RETROSPECTIVE COLLECTION
                                RECORD CONVERSION PROJECT

POSITION PURPOSE:       The Coordinator provides general supervision of
the
                                conversion of collection records to
standard electronic formats and their loading into databases accessed by
CHS's collection management computer systems.  The Coordinator provides
planning support to the Director of Collections Services in organizing
future CHS electronic collection records.

PRINCIPAL PERFORMANCE GOALS, 1997-2002:   Sustain and enhance CHS's role
                                as a premier research institution, its
reputation for excellent customer service, and its commitment to
education and lifelong learning, by implementing automated systems and
records that afford electronic and other forms of access to CHS holdings
for the broadest group of users possible, and by representing the
Society to the research library and information science communities.
Increase and improve access to and knowledge of these CHS resources by
creating electronic records in the most consistent, efficient, and
cost-effective manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
                                Commitment to excellent public service
                                Commitment to making the histories of
all Chicagoans accessible
                                Commitment to collaboration and teamwork

                                Experience directing and managing large
projects
                                Experience working in teams and
supervising staff
                                Three years managing museum
computerization projects, especially retrospective conversion projects

                                Advanced knowledge of cataloging
principles, standards, procedures, and systems pertaining to special
collections research library materials in many formats, including USMARC

                                In-depth knowledge of the principles and
uses of automated systems, and a working familiarity with a wide range
of database management and on-line public access systems for library and
museum collections, including OCLC and RLIN
                                General knowledge of American and
Chicago History
                                Advanced degree in Library or
Information Science and American History or the humanities

                                Ability to solve technical and
procedural problems creatively
                                Ability to plan, manage budgets, and
implement programs
                                Superior oral and written communication
skills, and the ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with
members of the public.

OTHER:                  This is a four year appointment with opportunity
                                for extension
