LINKING COMMUNITIES AND MUSEUMS: PEOPLE, POWER, PROCESS
Museum directors, curators, and programmers are experiencing profound shifts
in their relationships with communities as public funding diminishes and
diverse interest groups seek greater involvement in the preservation of
their cultural heritage. This workshop examines the complex factors which
are reshaping ways in which communities and museums interact, and provides
you with strategies to build more meaningful and mutually beneficial
relationships. You are encouraged to consider your own institution and
programs in light of:
o the nature, role, and changing expectations of communities
o issues of perspective, ownership, representation, and expertise
o the meaning and management of effective partnerships
o the three 'P's' of new museum work: People, Power, Process
o beyond advisory committees-new approaches to governance and power sharing
o principles and strategies for co-curating
o approaches to community cultural planning
Co-Instructors: Greg Baeker is a consultant and teacher specializing
in community cultural planning and has a background in museums and
public policy. Lynette Harper is an adult educator with extensive
experience in museum and community partnerships.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

a) To provide an opportunity for museum professionals to share
experience on the evolving relationship of communities and museums
b) To seed this dialogue with leading national and international
ideas in such relevant fields as cultural planning and community
development
c) To build a set of principles to guide community-museum
relations
d) To provide an opportunity for participants to construct frameworks
for action in their own work.
e)To establish a network of individuals interested in ongoing
dialogue on building meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships
between communities and museums

DRAFT COURSE OUTLINE

DAY 1 - NEW INTENTIONS
* Introduction to dialogue and reflection practices used in
organizational learning; participants will use these techniques
throughout the workshop
* Guided discussion on the significance of how we conceptualize
core concepts in museums (e.g., culture, heritage, community,
education, curatorship, stewardship, knowledge, etc.)
* Small group dialogue and reflection on select core concepts:
participants to be presented with differing understandings of core
museum concepts and given an opportunity to analyze their own
personal 'positions' and organizational or professional
* Small group dialogue (cont'd) - what are the implications of
differing views on these core concepts for museum practice? are there
conditions for success that we can identify?
* Reporting back from working groups and large group reflection
on implications for museum practice
DAY 2 - NEW MANAGEMENT PRACTICES:
CHANGE FROM THE INSIDE OUT
* Presentations by guest speakers followed by opportunities for small
group dialogue and sharing of experience
