COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
Lehigh County Historical Society (Allentown, PA)
Summer 1997

The Lehigh County Historical Society (LCHS) in Allentown, PA, is offering a
10-week summer collections management internship to a qualified graduate
student in a museum studies or related program. LCHS administers nine
historic sites, as well as four off-site storage areas throughout Lehigh
County. The prospective intern will be responsible for going through one of
LCHS's collections storage areas and determining the disposition of the
unaccessioned objects into one of three categories: the permanent
collections, the education collection, or deaccessioning consideration.
These determinations will be based upon LCHS's collections policy, any
available provenance, and consultation with LCHS curatorial staff. Those
objects being accessioned into the permanent collections will then be
cataloged using MINARET, the collections database used by LCHS, and
physically numbered. Several collections will need to be rehoused,
including the costumes, glass/ceramics, and military collections. The
intern may also make suggestions on how to better organize the storage area.
Aside from this project, the prospective intern will assist the collections
manager with various projects, such as numbering/photographing objects
inside a mid-19th century Pennsylvania German bank barn, and documenting the
dismantling/storage or a large loom at one of LCHS's sites.

The internship is slated to run from June 2 - August 8, 1997, however, these
dates are negotiable. A stipend of $2,500 for the 10 weeks, plus housing,
will be available to the successful candidate. To apply, please send a
cover letter and resume to Colleen E. Curry, Collections Manager, LCHS, Old
Courthouse, PO Box 1548, Allentown, PA 18105-1548. Questions may be
addressed to Colleen at 610-435-4664. No e-mail or faxed applications will
be accepted.
