Position Available: Senior Collections Management Assistant
        (Fossil Mammals, Department of Geology, The Field Museum)

Salary: $24,000/year

This is a full-time (35 hours/week), term (one year, possibly renewable for an
additional year) position.  The Field Museum recently was awarded a grant
from the National Science Foundation ("Support for the Field Museum Fossil
Mammal Collection: A New Collection Facility").  During this project the
entire fossil mammal collection will be moved into a mobile compactorized
storage system in a new 7,500 square foot facility, with basic recuration
and enhanced conservation of all  specimens (providing conservation-grade
ethafoam padding, repair broken specimens, ensure all specimens are numbered
and have appropriate identification labels, etc.).  The Senior Collections
Management Assistant, working with the Curator (John Flynn) and Collections
Management staff (William Simpson, Steven McCarroll, and Robert Masek), will
assist the department with various curatorial improvements to the fossil
mammal collection.  Also supervises a Collections Management Assistant,
graduate student, and undergraduate intern.  Requires a master's degree and
training in mammalian paleontology; a Ph.D. in vertebrate paleontology and
experience working with museum collections strongly preferred.  Useful
skills include knowledge of anatomy, mammalian systematics and paleontology,
curation and conservation techniques, and collection labelling and
databases; excellent hand-eye coordination (for specimen handling and
repair) and interpersonal/management skills; efficient and organized.  The
successful
candidate will begin employment on or after April 15,1997.
