Regarding outreach, we need to remember to be broad in defining who, and
where, our communities are. Working in a small Arctic museum in Maine,
we are faced with a number of outreach questions. On the one hand part
of our mission (the part most easily addressed) it to educate the
physically proximate community about the Arctic and its peoples. But as
the repository of historic collections of phototgraphs and objects from
the north, part of our community is also physically distant from us, for
we surely have an obligation to the communities represented in the images
we hold.
We have not interns in any shape or form, and so members of northern
communites are not represented on our staff (I'm not sure we could
convince anyone to move to Maine anyways!), but there are other avenues.
Currently we are developing and/or applying for funding for projects that
would bring parts of our photographic collections to communites in
various parts of the north, as parts of travelling exhibits, oral history
projects and collaborations with local musuems and cultural institutes.
The difficulty is, of course, the distance which inhibits communication,
makes visits (in either direction) prohibitively expensive....
We are not likely to achieve world peace with these sorts of programs,
but we will, hopefully, help contribute to the conservation and awareness
of historic heritage in the north, and educate those in the south about it...
Any other suggestions?
