For our 50,000-+ objects, we use a freeform database package called AskSam
(for windows). It's great and in use by a number of museums & archives.
It doesn't "do" the cataloging but with your help sets up the matrix for
each object. Also links to a scanner so a photo of each item can be kept
in the file. Depending on the number of objects you have, it may be
necessary to devote most of your available hard drive space to
this.....though we use a backup hard disk and also a backup tape for secure
storage. Available from AskSam Systems, PO 1428, Perry, Fla. 32347. Tel.
