There is a standard work that gives historical societies by State and
then by city - with listings by county and type in the index -


   Directory of Historical Agencies in North America
   Nashville, TN;  American Assocation for State and Local History.


  We have the 13th ed, 1986, but I'm sure there has since been a more
recent edition published.
