CURATORIAL CARE OF ARTIFACTS
with Mary-Lou Florian, February 19-28, 1997

Following is a  summary of  this upcoming course offered
through the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of
Victoria - there a couple of seats still available - please let us
know if you wish to receive registration materials. Hope you can join
us!

COURSE OUTLINE SUMMARY
Wednesday, February 19
Morning:
* The course and the participants
* An overview of the history of museums; the artifact; a collection
(human and natural history); ownership, stewardship, trust; use;
ethical, cultural, legal, health and economic issues of collections;
and client expectations
* Tour of Maltwood Art Museum & Gallery temporary and permanent
storage
* Field Trip: Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM)
Afternoon:
* Overview of RBCM collections re: conservation priorities, care
issues and responsibilities
* Types of collections according to materials, cultural use, others
* Types of storage: permanent, temporary, cultural, materials, etc.
* Documentation: curatorial and conservation
* Physical logistics of artifact movement
* Insect monitoring and inspection of incoming artifacts
* RBCM Classroom - Coffee with Museum Collections
Staff
* Conservation Laboratory visit - CIN, E-MAIL, Internet

Thursday, February 20
Morning:
* Review of previous day's tours
* Organic (synthetic and natural) and inorganic materials of artifacts
and their interaction with their macro and micro environment -
conservation and preparation treatments
* The materials
* The environment: water relationships, water vapour, moisture
content, water activity; temperature, light, gases, pollutants
Afternoon:
* Guest Speaker: Kjerstin Mackie, Textile Conservator, RBCM:
Environmental monitoring: methods and instruments (hygrothermograph,
psychrometer, logger), operation and maintenance, and interpretation
of results
* Handling and dedicated care

Friday, February 21
Morning:
* Biodeterioration: the insect pests and eradication methods
* Insect pest prevention, integrated insect pest control program
monitoring methods, inspection procedures, etc.
Afternoon:
* Fungi, biology, prevention and eradication
* Health issues
* Disaster preparedness
* Collection recovery
* Practicum:  microscopic observation of fungi infestations and
interpretation
* Practicum: insect recognition: the species, the infestation and the
damage

Monday, February 24
Morning:
* Field Trip: Royal British Columbia Museum
* Guest Speaker: Robert Byers - tour of exhibits
* Types of exhibitry, artifact use, exhibit cases and mounts,
maintenance * Tour of storage by Collection Managers
* approximately 25 minutes in each area: Ethnology and Archaeology,
History, and Natural History (herbarium and invertebrate collection)
* Care of objects during: registration, documentation procedures,
loan preparation, research and storage preparation
Afternoon:
* Materials and Methods: Storage, Transport and Cleaning
* Guest Speaker: George Field, Conservator, RBCM: Examples of storage
materials and methods, and packing for transport - Discussion of
problems
* Guest Speaker: TBA: Preventative care: maintenance and
cleaning treatment of artifacts: demonstration and practicum

Tuesday, February 25
Morning
* Collection Exhibit And Storage
Afternoon:
* Documentation, Condition Assessment
* Maltwood museum registration:
* Documentation: curatorial description, initial condition
terminology, labelling; CHIN and other programs
* Documentation: examples of conservation condition reports and
treatment reports, terminology, CIN, computer software
* OBJECTS - Ethnographic (wood, leather etc.), Textiles, Plastics,
Metals, Natural History, Archival Paleontology, and other artifacts
* Practicum: Examples of damage, and terminology
* Methods of identification of materials of artifact and reports
*Participants are expected to hand in at the end of the course a
completed documentation and recommended treatments of objects they
bring themselves or of those supplied by the instructors

Wednesday, February 26
Morning:
* Practicum: Identification of materials of objects and
descriptions of damage
Afternoon:
* Guest Speaker: Jane Hutchins, Textile Conservator:
Textiles, Clothing, Apparel
* Documentation and preventative care: maintenance and cleaning
treatment of we and dry artifacts
* Textile Artifacts: Demonstration and practicum

Thursday, February 27
Morning:
* Ancillary materials
* Evaluation of suppliers literature; sources of suppliers CIN; Data
bank of tests on materials used as supplies, CCI
* Guest Speaker:Martin Segger, Director, Maltwood Art Museum and
Gallery: "Planning for a New Museum at a University - Collection
issues"
* Textiles, Clothing, Apparel
* Documentation and preventative care: maintenance and cleaning
treatment of wet and dry artifacts
* Textile Artifacts: Demonstration and practicum
Afternoon:
* Guest Speaker: Bill Barkley, Executive Director, Royal
British Columbia Museum:"The Problems of Museums Today - Collection
issues"

Friday, February 28
Morning:
* Odds and ends, finishing documentation, etc.
Afternoon:
* Participant Presentations
* Course Review

* Mary-Lou Florian will be available for individual participant
consultations at the end of each day re: assignments and specific
work-related  collection or object problems


Course Instructor: Mary Lou Florian is Conservator Emeritus of the
Royal British Columbia Museum
Fee: $589 (credit or non-credit, Canadian funds)
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from both
Vancouver and Seattle
