Have you considered electroluminescent panels? You can now get
electroluminescent film which you can cut to shape yourself. When activated
with around 100V at 400Hz, it produces a beautiful cool, even glow in a
range of colours. Manufacturers supply suitable power supplies and
interfaces to TTL. I only have UK source information, so you would have to
do your own local research.

Main drawback is that the glow is not that bright, but it looks fine in a
the sort of exhibition where the general lighting level is low with
exhibits picked out at higher level.
