October, the directorship of IMLS will change every two years between a
museum specialist and a library specialist.

The museum portion of IMLS is getting *more* money for FY 97 than IMS got
in 96, so there's not a "cut." Most of the extra is going for
conservation.

We know that 97 will be a transitional year; that is, there won't
be any noticeable changes at the agency. However, that's not to suggest
that subsequent changes will be radical. The arrangement is more fairly
characterized as a cohabitation than a "merger." With respect to the
museum portion, which is funded separately from the library portion, the
main function will continue to be GOS.

The directorship will change every four years, not every two.
