When the new head (he's either a provost or a secretary) of the Smithsonian
came in, one of his goal's was to increase the Latino presence at the
Smithsonian. Currently, a new photo exhibit by Latino artists is being moved
into the International Gallery. I think October was Hispanic Heritage month
and had a lot of festivities associated with it.

At my office, the Smithsonian Associates, the membership arm of the
Smithsonian, we have many employees who are people of color and I consider us
to be very ethnically diverse. (I'd wager at least 1/3 of the office is made
up of people of color.) The new catalogue of programs put on by the
Associates includes, Latino, African-American, Persian, Asian, and Indian
(the sub-continent) programs.

This might get me flamed but the percentage of Latinos who got to college
is smaller than the percentage of whites or black that go to college. Spread
them over over dozens of majors and I think that is a big reason for a smaller
Latino presence in museums. But I do think that the Latino presence is
growing as the overall population grows.
