Speaking of Latinos in Museums....this is a fabulous opportunity for
involvement.  I was a participant in 1994 and would be happy to answer

The Smithsonian Institution and the Inter-University Program for Latino
Research present the 1997 Latino Graduate Training Seminar in Qualitative
Methodology & Fellowship Program, "Interpreting Latino Cultures: Research &
Museums."

Description:
The seminar is designed to bring Latina and Latino graduate students from
across the country to work together with distinguished Latina and Latino
faculty, Smithsonian professionals, and curators and archivists from other
national collections. Participants will explore the issues of qualitative
research and the representation and interpretation of Latino cultures in
museums and archival collections.

Eligibility:
Latina or Latino (Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Mexican American, or other)
currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a U.S. university. The workshop
will be limited to 15 participants.

Dates:
June 16 to June 27, 1997

Location:
Seminars will be conducted at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
Students will visit various Smithsonisn museums, tour exhibits and
collections, and participate in panel discussions and presentations.
Students will stay in dorms at George Washington University.

Stipends:
Air flights, local transportation to the Smithsonian, and housing are
covered, and all participants will receive a stipend as partial financial
assistance to cover meals and incidental costs.
