You are quite correct that many institutions DO demand
degrees.  Some of us do that because it is a way to guage
what an individual knows and has learned.  As a public
institution, the law won't let us interview folks to see
what they know and make judgements about that, it requires
that we advertise standards and requirements, and that we
hire people who meet those advertised standards.  I suppose
we could write a test for all our applicants to take, but
isn't that what the schools do for us???  Perhaps the person
who wrote the original question should contact the 10
museums she/he'd most like to work at and ASK THEM what
their credentials requirements are?
