Thanks for letting me know that IMS has survived. I always
thought their basic survey plans were so very reasonable
that anyone could see the benefits. I have worked with
IMS basis conservation survey grants at two museums and
would encourage anyone who would be helped by a survey
of their collection to go for it. I used to think that
because one collection's needs were so basic (shelves,
boxes, getting everything off the floor) that IMS would
not be interested, but they were. When the collections
staff realized one day that we were moving the last of
our materials into shelves in cabinets, we had a moment
of grateful silence. Another advantage of the grant is
that the agency that maintained the building had decided
collection storage did not need climate control or
restricted access, but once I showed them the conservators
reports they said "Oh, OK." I was miffed that they had
not believed me the first time (or the twentieth), but
still so pleased to be able to add those features.
