Unfortunately, the article does not give all the details. The student in
question was a masters engineering graduate student, defending his MA for
the second time (at San Diego State University). His thesis had been
rejected the first time, and he was apparently convinced that the
professors were out to get him.

He allegedly hid the gun in a first-aid kit in the room where the defense
was to be held, and walked over to it during the questioning.

The student was found near the murder scene and quickly arrested. The
authorities said that they were trying to figure out a motive for the
slayings. It is obvious that none of them had ever been to graduate
school. The engineering school at SDSU is supposed to be very hard and
often takes a heavy toll on students.
