Paul A. is right, of course -- I was being rather simplistic.  Paul's
response in my opinion raised the level of the thread (sorry for mixed
metaphor) a great deal, in that he offered some constructive ideas about
*how* to achieve higher wages beyond just complaining.

On the other hand, to repeat my own (somewhat dated) experience, I would
hardly offer universities as models of enlightened employers!
