The Canadian Museum of Civilization has one of the most photographed exteriors
in the national capital region, but most visitors seem very reluctant to try to
take pictures inside it (video photographers excepted). I suspect this is
because they have been conditioned by unpleasant experiences elsewhere. Museum
management, in fact, ENCOURAGES photography, both inside and out. When I worked
at CMC, I suggested that we produce a brochure for visitors on how to
photograph the museum (best vantage points, how to avoid reflections from shiny
surfaces, best lenses to use for particular shots, etc. I understand that the
museum's two professional photographers are now working on such a brochure. I'm
sure that other museums have done something similar and I would be interested
in hearing of their experiences.
