The Registrar's Committee of the American Association of museums has a
subcommittee devoted to the issue of marking museum objects - they have
done a great deal of research in collaboration with conservators.  Their
findings will be published in the forthcoming revision of Museum
Registration Methods.

In the meantime, you can get in touch with Terry Segal at the Detroit
Institute of Arts who was one of the people working on this project - I'm
sure she would be glad to share information with you.  Her fax number is
