I'm picking this up mid thread so forgive me if this has been covered.

I work at a science museum and what minor collections we have is in a
single archive room and none of it is displayed.  I suppose this is the
reason my type of institution has been changing its name to science center.
Nevertheless, I can assure we still perform a valuable function to the
community at large.

Not wanting to pick on anybody but Greg Shuman's "museum without
collections" like a motorcar without engine, wheels and body reminds me
what we use to call the Physics' for the Nonscientist back at University -
Physics for Poets is like English for the illiterate, Music for the Deaf
and Film for the Blind.  It is a very elitist attitude.  Instead of looking
at what everybody has or does maybe we should be more interested in what
they do with what they got.
