Greetings,
Our museum education department has been given a new challenge to develop
programs for the above mentioned audience in and out of schools. I would
appreciate your assistance in identifying published sources on theory,
parellel studies and even your own experiences in this matter.
Two of the issues seems to be the identification and qualification of this
audience. In a limited manner, we address this audience through our school
programs. The public school system has a program for free or subsidized
lunches. At the beginning of the school year each family in the district is
sent a form to qualify students for this program. If the family qualifies
as economically disadvantaged then the student may receive free or
subsidized meals. This information is used by us indirectly when teachers
book a tour.
Our school flyer indicates that students who qualify for the free lunch
program are admitted free or at a reduced rate. When the teacher (or
parent) books a tour she has to indicate how many students qualify for the
meal program. She is then required to get a letter from her principal
indicating HOW MANY students qualify for the meal program. We do NOT
require names. This admission policy has been in effect for five years.
Cross listing of this information to other listserv's would be appreciated.
So there's my story. . . what's yours?
