The program I am in, for example, requires

In this case, you're right--it is unconscionable to expect someone to work
full time full time for six months for free. The interns that I have had
worked 8-10 hours per week-no more time than they would have put in for a
class. On the other hand, I'm sure I've seen ads in AVISO for paid
internships that seemed pretty close to real wages.
