I just chaired a panel at AAM on outreach programs which put museum objects in
the public schools. There are many such programs. My panel presented four
different approaches: 18-wheeler mobile museum, artifact trunks in the
schools, costumed educators with objects, and suitcase travelling art shows.
Our program is 40 years old, currently has almost 50 shows travelling to over
100 schools in Maine, and is very organized. Shows are focused, come with
display instructions, educational materials, and shipping labels for the next
venue. The scheduling is very automated, relying on a program running on the
university mainframe.
I'd be happy to send a list of the panelists at the AAM session, or more
information about the University of Maine Museum of Art program to anyone who
contacts me off-list.
