This sounds very similar to an illness I currently suffer from.
Its generally called panic disorder and has both neurological and
psychological components. Doctors dont understand this illness
very well and it often leads to years of frustrating misdiagnosis.
In theory, chemical exposure (especially to neurotoxins) can cause
an imbalance in the general nervous system. This often causes
physical symptoms such as breathing difficulties, erratic heartbeat,
dizziness, etc. and makes people very prone to severe anxiety
reactions. I cant say for sure that this is what's happening to your
ethnographical people, but it is a possiblity.
